Breastfeeding and Dads
If your baby’s father would like to be involved in the feeding, there are many things he can do to help! He could fetch you a cup of tea/sandwich/glass of water.
He could burp the baby, massage your shoulders while you try to feed baby or express milk (which actually helps your milk ejection reflex!)
Babies enjoy listening to dad’s heartbeat as much as yours, and skin-to-skin cuddles with dad are as important for dads and bonding as breastfeeding is for you.
Dad can also sit with you during the feed and simply enjoy being with you and your baby.
If dad would like to give baby a feed, you can express milk, (see Expressing milk) which can then be given by dad. This can be by spoon, cup or dropper, or by a bottle-but please be aware that introducing a bottle can sometimes lead to breast refusal.
